Overview
Albuterol sulfate is a selective beta-2 adrenergic bronchodilator used as an inhalation solution for nebulization.
Uses
Indicated for relief of bronchospasm in patients 2 years of age and older with reversible obstructive airway disease and acute attacks of bronchospasm.
Dosage
Adults and children weighing at least 15 kg: 2.5 mg (one vial of 3 mL) administered three to four times daily by nebulization. Administer entire contents over approximately 5 to 15 minutes. Higher doses or more frequent administration not recommended.
Side Effects
Clinical trials reported tremors (20%), dizziness (7%), nervousness (4%), headache (3%), nausea (4%), bronchospasm (8%), cough (4%), and bronchitis (4%). Post-marketing cases included urticaria, angioedema, rash, arrhythmias, and metabolic acidosis.
Interactions
Do not use concomitantly with other sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators or epinephrine. Use with extreme caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants. Beta-receptor blocking agents inhibit albuterol effects.
Warnings
Can produce paradoxical bronchospasm, which can be life-threatening; discontinue immediately if this occurs. Fatalities reported with excessive use of inhaled sympathomimetics. May have clinically significant cardiac effects. Immediate hypersensitivity reactions are possible.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C. Teratogenic in mice at doses 1.25 times human nebulization dose. No adequate studies in pregnant women. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential fetal risk.
Storage
Protect from light. Store in pouch until use. Store between 2° and 25°C (36° and 77°F).
