Uses
Indicated for treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents (13-17 years), irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents (6-17 years), and Tourette's disorder.
Dosage
For schizophrenia in adults: initial dose 10-15 mg/day, recommended 10-15 mg/day, maximum 30 mg/day. For adolescents (13-17 years): initial 2 mg/day, target 10 mg/day, maximum 30 mg/day. For autistic disorder (6-17 years): initial 2 mg/day, target 5-10 mg/day, maximum 15 mg/day.
Side Effects
Common adverse reactions in adults include nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, akathisia, anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness. In pediatric patients: somnolence, headache, vomiting, extrapyramidal disorder, fatigue, increased appetite, insomnia, nausea, and weight increase.
Warnings
Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs face increased risk of death. Aripiprazole is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. Increased risk of suicidal thinking in children, adolescents, and young adults. Monitor closely for worsening and emergence of suicidal thoughts.
