Articaine HCl and Epinephrine is a sterile, aqueous solution containing articaine HCl 4% (40 mg/mL) and epinephrine bitartrate for intraoral submucosal infiltration use as a dental anesthetic.

Uses

Indicated for local, infiltrative, or conductive anesthesia in both simple and complex dental procedures in adults and pediatric patients 4 years of age or older.

Dosage

For infiltration: 0.5-2.5 mL (20-100 mg); nerve block: 0.5-3.4 mL (20-136 mg); oral surgery: 1.0-5.1 mL (40-204 mg). Maximum recommended dosage: 7 mg/kg of articaine HCl for healthy adults and pediatric patients 4-16 years.

Side Effects

Most common: headache and pain. Others include face edema, infection, gingivitis, paresthesia, swelling, trismus, nausea. Postmarketing reports of persistent paresthesias of the lips, tongue, and oral tissues.

Interactions

Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors, nonselective beta-blockers, or tricyclic antidepressants may produce severe, prolonged hypertension. Concurrent exposure to oxidizing agents increases methemoglobinemia risk.

Warnings

Accidental intravascular injection may cause convulsions followed by coma and respiratory arrest. Risk of systemic toxicity, vasoconstrictor toxicity, methemoglobinemia. Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to products containing sulfites.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature 25 degrees C (77 degrees F) with brief excursions permitted between 15 and 30 degrees C. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
