Uses
Indicated for the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults.
Dosage
Children and adolescents up to 70 kg: start at 0.5 mg/kg daily, titrating to 1.2 mg/kg target. Those over 70 kg and adults: begin at 40 mg, increasing to 80 mg target, with maximum 100 mg daily.
Side Effects
Common pediatric reactions include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Adults commonly experience constipation, dry mouth, nausea, decreased appetite, dizziness, erectile dysfunction, and urinary hesitation.
Interactions
Avoid MAOIs. CYP2D6 inhibitors increase atomoxetine levels. Use caution with antihypertensives, pressor agents, and beta-2 agonists.
Warnings
BOXED WARNING: Suicidal ideation in children and adolescents. Increased risk of suicidal ideation in short-term studies. Monitor for severe liver injury, serious cardiovascular events, blood pressure and heart rate increases, psychotic symptoms. Contraindicated with MAOIs and in narrow angle glaucoma.
Pregnancy
Limited human data available. Animal studies showed adverse developmental outcomes at high doses.
