Barium sulfate suspension (105% w/v, 58% w/w) for oral and rectal administration. Used as a contrast agent for radiographic imaging of the gastrointestinal tract.

Uses

For radiography of the gastrointestinal tract.

Dosage

Dosing varies by procedure type. Oral esophagus studies: 60-300 mL undiluted. Stomach: 150-340 mL. Small bowel: 340-750 mL. Rectal single contrast: 1000-2500 mL diluted. Double contrast: 500-1500 mL undiluted.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping are infrequent and usually mild. Severe reactions (approximately 1 in 1,000,000) and fatalities (approximately 1 in 10,000,000) have occurred.

Interactions

Barium sulfate formulations in the GI tract may alter absorption of therapeutic agents taken concurrently.

Warnings

Rarely, severe allergic reactions of an anaphylactoid nature have been reported. Personnel and facilities should be available for emergency treatment for at least 30-60 minutes post-administration. Contraindicated in patients with known gastric or intestinal perforation or barium sulfate hypersensitivity.

Pregnancy

Radiographic procedures should only be used when deemed essential to the pregnant patient welfare. Barium sulfate products may be used during lactation.

Storage

USP Controlled Room Temperature, 20 to 25C (68 to 77F). Protect from freezing.
