Uses
Indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
Dosage
Adults: Initial 10 mg once daily (5 mg if on diuretic); titrate up to 40 mg daily. Pediatric (age 6 and older): 0.2 mg/kg once daily, maximum 0.6 mg/kg daily. Renal impairment (GFR below 30): 5 mg once daily.
Side Effects
Most common adverse reactions compared to placebo: headache (6% vs. 4%), dizziness (4% vs. 2%), somnolence (2% vs. 0%).
Interactions
Interactions with diuretics, antidiabetics, NSAIDs, dual RAS blockade agents, lithium, mTOR inhibitors, and gold compounds. Use caution with concurrent medications.
Warnings
WARNING: FETAL TOXICITY - When pregnancy is detected, discontinue benazepril hydrochloride tablets as soon as possible. Risk of angioedema, impaired renal function, hypotension, hyperkalemia, and hepatic failure. Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity, angioedema history, or concurrent neprilysin inhibitors.
