Benztropine mesylate is a synthetic compound containing structural features of atropine and diphenhydramine. It is used as an adjunct in the therapy of all forms of parkinsonism and to control extrapyramidal disorders due to neuroleptic drugs.

Uses

Adjunct therapy for all forms of parkinsonism. Also useful in the control of extrapyramidal disorders due to neuroleptic drugs, except tardive dyskinesia.

Dosage

Therapy should be initiated with a low dose which is increased gradually at five or six day intervals. The usual daily dose ranges from 0.5 to 6 mg, with a maximum of 6 mg daily. Dosage must be individualized according to age, weight, and type of condition being treated.

Side Effects

Tachycardia, paralytic ileus, constipation, vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, toxic psychosis, confusion, visual hallucinations, urinary retention, blurred vision, heat stroke, hyperthermia.

Interactions

Antipsychotics (phenothiazines, haloperidol) and tricyclic antidepressants may interact with benztropine mesylate.

Warnings

Not safe in pregnancy. May impair mental and physical abilities. Risk of anhidrosis and hyperthermia. Use caution with concurrent phenothiazines or tricyclic antidepressants. Contraindicated in pediatric patients under 3 years of age.

Pregnancy

Safe use in pregnancy has not been established.

Storage

Store at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F). Dispense in a well-closed container as defined in the USP.
