Bethanechol chloride is a cholinergic agent, a synthetic ester structurally related to acetylcholine. It is indicated for the treatment of acute postoperative and postpartum nonobstructive urinary retention and for neurogenic atony of the urinary bladder with retention.

Uses

Indicated for the treatment of acute postoperative and postpartum nonobstructive (functional) urinary retention and for neurogenic atony of the urinary bladder with retention.

Dosage

Usual adult oral dose ranges from 10 mg to 50 mg three or four times a day. Minimum effective dose starts at 5 to 10 mg, repeated hourly until satisfactory response or maximum 50 mg. Effects typically appear within 30 minutes, maximal within 60 to 90 minutes.

Side Effects

Abdominal discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, headache, blood pressure changes, flushing, sweating, bronchial constriction, and lacrimation.

Interactions

Special caution when combined with ganglion blocking compounds, which may cause critical blood pressure reduction.

Warnings

Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to bethanechol chloride, hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcer, latent or active bronchial asthma, pronounced bradycardia or hypotension, and mechanical obstruction conditions.
