Cefazolin is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for parenteral (IV/IM) administration. Indicated for treatment of serious infections including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, biliary, bone and joint, genital infections, septicemia, and endocarditis caused by susceptible organisms.

Uses
Treatment of serious infections including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and skin structure, biliary, bone and joint, genital infections, septicemia, endocarditis, and perioperative prophylaxis.
Dosage
Adults: 500 mg to 1 g every 6-8 hours for moderate to severe infections. Dosage adjusted for renal impairment. Pediatric dosing: 25-50 mg/kg/day divided into 3-4 doses.
Side Effects
Gastrointestinal: diarrhea, candidiasis, vomiting, pseudomembranous colitis. Allergic: anaphylaxis, rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Hematologic: neutropenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
Interactions
Probenecid may decrease renal tubular secretion, resulting in increased and prolonged cephalosporin blood levels.
Warnings
Risk of hypersensitivity reactions, especially in penicillin-sensitive patients (cross-reactivity up to 10%). Pseudomembranous colitis possible. Seizures may occur with high doses in renal impairment. Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin group of antibiotics.
Pregnancy
Animal studies at up to 25x human dose showed no evidence of harm. No adequate controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed.
Storage
Store at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F). Protect from light. Reconstituted solutions stable 24 hours at room temperature or 10 days refrigerated.
