Cephalexin is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibacterial drug for oral administration. Indicated for treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria including respiratory tract, otitis media, skin and skin structure, bone, and genitourinary tract infections.

Uses
Treatment of respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and genitourinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Dosage
Adults 15 years and older: 250 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours. Pediatrics over 1 year: 25-100 mg/kg in divided doses. Duration: 7-14 days.
Side Effects
Most common: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain. Serious: anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, C. difficile-associated diarrhea.
Interactions
Metformin: increased concentrations. Probenecid: inhibits renal excretion. False-positive glucose in urine with certain tests.
Warnings
Hypersensitivity reactions possible. C. difficile-associated diarrhea reported. Hemolytic anemia risk. Seizure potential in renal impairment. Prolonged prothrombin time risk. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalexin or cephalosporin class antibacterial drugs.
Pregnancy
Available epidemiologic data not establishing drug-associated risks of birth defects or miscarriage with cephalosporin use including cephalexin.
Storage
Store at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F). Dispense in tight, light-resistant container.
