Uses
Indicated to control emotional and somatic factors in gastrointestinal disorders. May also serve as supplementary therapy for peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and acute enterocolitis.
Dosage
The usual maintenance dose is 1 or 2 capsules, 3 or 4 times a day administered before meals and at bedtime. For elderly patients, initial dosing should not exceed 2 capsules daily with gradual increases as needed.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and nausea. Drowsiness, coordination problems, and confusion may occur, particularly in elderly patients.
Interactions
Opioid use increases respiratory depression risk. Variable effects on blood coagulation have rarely been reported with oral anticoagulants.
Warnings
Concomitant use of benzodiazepines and opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Abuse and addiction potential with dependence risks. Contraindicated in glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, and hypersensitivity.
