Sterile solution containing 1,000 mcg cyanocobalamin per mL with sodium chloride, benzyl alcohol, water, and pH adjusters for injection.

Uses

Treats Vitamin B12 deficiencies from malabsorption, including pernicious anemia, GI conditions, fish tapeworm, pancreatic or bowel malignancy, and folic acid deficiency.

Dosage

100 mcg daily for six or seven days by intramuscular or deep subcutaneous injection, then alternate days for seven doses, then every three to four days for two to three weeks, followed by 100 mcg monthly for life.

Side Effects

Anaphylactic shock, pulmonary edema, heart failure, polycythemia vera, mild diarrhea, itching, and transient skin reactions reported.

Interactions

Antibiotics, methotrexate, pyrimethamine affect diagnostic assays; colchicine, para-aminosalicylic acid, heavy alcohol impair absorption.

Warnings

Contains aluminum (toxic at high levels), benzyl alcohol associated with Gasping Syndrome in premature infants, risk of optic atrophy with Leber's disease, hypokalemia and sudden death possible. Contraindicated in patients with sensitivity to cobalt and/or Vitamin B12.

Pregnancy

Vitamin B12 is essential; 4 mcg daily recommended during pregnancy.

Storage

Store at 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F). Protect from light.
