Uses
Indicated as an adjunct to rest and physical therapy for relief of muscle spasm associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. Should be used for short periods only (up to 2-3 weeks).
Dosage
Recommended dose is 5 mg three times a day. Based on individual patient response, dose may be increased to 10 mg three times a day. Not recommended beyond 2-3 weeks.
Side Effects
Most common: drowsiness (29-38%), dry mouth (21-32%), fatigue (6%), headache (5%). Less frequent include dizziness, nausea, constipation, and blurred vision. Rare but serious: seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, serotonin syndrome.
Interactions
May have life-threatening interactions with MAO inhibitors. Enhances effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and CNS depressants. May interact with tricyclic antidepressants.
Warnings
Development of a potentially life-threatening serotonin syndrome has been reported when combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, tramadol, or MAO inhibitors. Risk of CNS depression with alcohol and other depressants. Contraindicated with concurrent MAO inhibitor use, acute myocardial infarction recovery phase, cardiac arrhythmias, heart block, or hyperthyroidism.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category B. Drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed based on animal studies showing no harm.
Storage
Store at 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F). Dispense in tight, light-resistant container.
