Uses
Desvenlafaxine is indicated for the treatment of adults with major depressive disorder (MDD).
Dosage
Recommended dose: 50 mg once daily with or without food. There was no evidence that doses greater than 50 mg per day confer any additional benefit.
Side Effects
Most common adverse reactions (incidence 5% or more and twice the rate of placebo) were: nausea, dizziness, insomnia, hyperhidrosis, constipation, somnolence, decreased appetite, anxiety, and specific male sexual function disorders.
Interactions
Significant interactions with MAOIs, serotonergic drugs, anticoagulants/antiplatelets, and CYP2D6-metabolized drugs noted.
Warnings
WARNING: SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS - Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term studies. Serotonin syndrome, elevated blood pressure, increased bleeding risk, angle closure glaucoma, mania activation, discontinuation syndrome risks. Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to desvenlafaxine or venlafaxine and with MAOI use.
Pregnancy
Exposure to SNRIs in the month before delivery has been associated with a less than 2-fold increase in postpartum hemorrhage risk.
