Uses

Extensive indications covering endocrine disorders (adrenocortical insufficiency), rheumatic disorders (arthritis variants, bursitis), collagen diseases, dermatologic conditions, allergic states, ophthalmic diseases, gastrointestinal conditions, respiratory diseases, hematologic disorders, neoplastic diseases, edematous states, nervous system conditions, and cerebral edema.

Dosage

Initial dosage ranges from 0.50 mg/day to 9 mg/day depending on disease severity. Parenteral doses typically one-third to one-half of oral doses given every 12 hours. For shock: 1-6 mg/kg IV or 40 mg initially, repeated every 2-6 hours. For cerebral edema: 10 mg IV initially, then 4 mg IM every six hours.

Side Effects

Fluid/electrolyte disturbances, musculoskeletal effects, gastrointestinal issues, dermatological changes, neurological effects, ophthalmic complications, endocrine disruptions, and metabolic consequences including osteoporosis and increased infection risk.

Warnings

Serious neurologic events, some resulting in death, have been reported with epidural injection of corticosteroids. Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections.
