Uses
Indicated for sedation of intubated, mechanically ventilated adult ICU patients (continuous infusion not exceeding 24 hours) and sedation of non-intubated adults undergoing surgical or other procedural interventions.
Dosage
ICU Sedation: Loading dose of 1 mcg/kg over 10 minutes, followed by maintenance infusion of 0.2-0.7 mcg/kg/hour. Procedural Sedation: Loading dose of 1 mcg/kg over 10 minutes, followed by maintenance infusion starting at 0.6 mcg/kg/hour, titrated to desired effect. Dose reduction should be considered for patients over 65 and those with hepatic impairment.
Side Effects
Most common adverse reactions (greater than 2% incidence): hypotension, bradycardia, and dry mouth. Additional notable reactions include hypertension, nausea, atrial fibrillation, and pyrexia.
Interactions
Co-administration with anesthetics, sedatives, hypnotics, or opioids may enhance effects, requiring dose reduction.
