Uses

Indicated for Narcolepsy and Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity as part of comprehensive treatment programs for patients ages 6-16. Not recommended for children under 6 years.

Dosage

Narcolepsy: 5-60 mg daily in divided doses. Ages 6-12: start 5 mg daily, increase by 5 mg weekly. Ages 12+: start 10 mg daily, increase by 10 mg weekly. ADHD: Start 5 mg once/twice daily for ages 6+; increase by 5 mg weekly. Rarely exceed 40 mg daily.

Side Effects

Common: fast heartbeat, decreased appetite, tremors, headache, insomnia, dizziness, stomach upset, weight loss, dry mouth. Serious: psychotic episodes, cardiomyopathy, palpitations, tachycardia, hypertension, rhabdomyolysis, urticaria.

Interactions

Key interactions: acidifying/alkalinizing agents, tricyclic antidepressants, CYP2D6 inhibitors, serotonergic drugs, MAO inhibitors, proton pump inhibitors, adrenergic blockers, antihypertensives, lithium carbonate.

Contraindicated with known hypersensitivity and MAOIs.
