Uses

Treatment of insulin-induced hypoglycemia in adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older.

Dosage

Adults and pediatrics 12+: 10-25 grams (20-50 mL) via central or large peripheral vein. Pediatrics 2-11: central vein only. Maximum infusion rate 0.5 g/kg body weight/hour.

Side Effects

Hyperglycemia, hypersensitivity reactions, phlebitis, thrombosis, hyponatremia, electrolyte imbalance, infection, anaphylaxis, and angioedema.

Interactions

Monitor blood glucose and electrolytes with concomitant drugs affecting glycemic control. Avoid concurrent use with agents causing hyponatremia.

Warnings

Risk of hyperglycemia and hyperosmolar state, phlebitis from hypertonic solution, hyponatremia, electrolyte imbalance, aluminum toxicity in renal impairment, and hypersensitivity reactions. Contraindicated in intracranial/intraspinal hemorrhage, severe dehydration, alcohol withdrawal, and dextrose hypersensitivity.

Pregnancy

Appropriate administration not expected to cause birth defects, but maternal hyperglycemia at delivery associated with neonatal hypoglycemia risk.
