Diclofenac potassium for oral solution is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, available as a buffered soluble powder designed to be mixed with water prior to oral administration.

Uses

Indicated for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults (18 years of age or older). It is not for migraine prevention or cluster headache treatment.

Dosage

Empty the contents of one packet into a cup containing 1 to 2 ounces (30 to 60 mL) of water, mix well and drink immediately. The single dose is 50 mg. Taking with food may reduce effectiveness compared to fasting administration.

Side Effects

Most common adverse reactions were nausea and dizziness. Nausea occurred in 3% of treated patients versus 2% with placebo. Rare serious reactions include anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and liver failure.

Interactions

Significant interactions exist with anticoagulants, aspirin, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, diuretics, digoxin, lithium, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and other NSAIDs.

Warnings

NSAIDs cause increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, which can be fatal. Increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation. Contraindicated with known hypersensitivity, history of reactions to aspirin/NSAIDs, and CABG surgery.

Pregnancy

Avoid use at about 30 weeks gestation and later due to fetal ductus arteriosus closure risk. Between 20-30 weeks, limit to lowest effective dose and shortest duration.

Storage

Store at 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F); excursions permitted to 15 to 30 degrees C.
