Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride and Atropine Sulfate is a prescription antidiarrheal medication containing 2.5 mg diphenoxylate hydrochloride and 0.025 mg atropine sulfate per tablet.
Uses
Indicated as adjunctive therapy in the management of diarrhea in patients 13 years of age and older.
Dosage
Initial adult dosage is 2 tablets four times daily (maximum 20 mg diphenoxylate per day). After initial control, dosage may be reduced. If improvement not seen within 10 days, discontinue use.
Side Effects
Includes respiratory/CNS depression, atropinism, numbness of extremities, euphoria, depression, dizziness, hallucination, urticaria, megacolon, paralytic ileus, tachycardia, urinary retention, flushing, and dry skin/mucous membranes.
Interactions
Alcohol increases CNS depressant effects. Other CNS depressants potentiate effects. MAOIs may precipitate hypertensive crisis.
Warnings
Respiratory/CNS depression in pediatric patients less than 6 years of age. Anticholinergic and opioid toxicities. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance risk. GI complications with infectious diarrhea. Toxic megacolon in ulcerative colitis. Contraindicated in pediatric patients less than 6 years, diarrhea with C. difficile, known hypersensitivity, and obstructive jaundice.
Pregnancy
Should be used during pregnancy only if anticipated benefit justifies potential fetal risk. Caution with nursing women as metabolites and atropine may be excreted in breast milk.
Storage
Store below 25 degrees C (77 degrees F).
