Uses

Indicated for signs and symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and treatment of hypertension.

Dosage

For BPH: initiate at 1 mg daily, titrate at 1-2 week intervals up to maximum 8 mg daily. For hypertension: begin at 1 mg daily, increase as needed to maximum 16 mg daily. Monitor blood pressure for at least 6 hours after initial dose or dose increases.

Side Effects

Common adverse effects include dizziness (15.6-19% incidence), fatigue (8-12%), somnolence (3-5%), hypotension, and edema. Post-marketing reports document priapism, intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, and blood cell count decreases.

Interactions

Strong CYP3A inhibitors may increase doxazosin exposure. PDE-5 inhibitors combined with doxazosin cause additive blood pressure reduction and symptomatic hypotension risks.

Warnings

Risk of postural hypotension with syncope possible. Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery. Prostate cancer screening recommended. Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to doxazosin, other quinazolines, or any other ingredient.
