Uses

Recommended for treating psychoneurotic patients with depression and/or anxiety, depression linked to alcoholism or organic disease, and psychotic depressive disorders. Target symptoms include anxiety, tension, depression, sleep disturbances, and worry.

Dosage

Starting daily dose of 75 mg for mild-to-moderate illness; usual range is 75-150 mg/day. Severely ill patients may require up to 300 mg/day. Once-daily dosing maximum is 150 mg at bedtime.

Side Effects

Include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, confusion, and cardiovascular effects like hypotension or tachycardia.

Interactions

Doxepin is primarily metabolized by CYP2D6. Interactions with SSRIs, MAO inhibitors, cimetidine, and alcohol are documented.
