Uses
Indicated as a complete regimen or in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg.
Dosage
One tablet once daily taken orally on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg.
Side Effects
Most common include diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, headache, dizziness, depression, insomnia, abnormal dreams, and rash.
Interactions
Numerous significant interactions documented with protease inhibitors, anticonvulsants, antifungals, and other medications. Contraindicated with voriconazole or elbasvir/grazoprevir.
Warnings
BOXED WARNING: Severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B virus (HBV) have been reported in coinfected patients who discontinued products containing emtricitabine and/or tenofovir. Extensive warnings including rash, hepatotoxicity, psychiatric symptoms, renal impairment, embryo-fetal toxicity, and bone mineral density decreases.

Avoid pregnancy while receiving and for 12 weeks after discontinuation due to potential neural tube defect risk.
