Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) is a prescription synthetic calcium regulator containing 1.25 mg (50,000 USP Units) per capsule.
Uses
Indicated for use in the treatment of hypoparathyroidism, refractory rickets, and familial hypophosphatemia.
Dosage
Vitamin D Resistant Rickets: 12,000 to 500,000 USP Units daily. Hypoparathyroidism: 50,000 to 200,000 USP Units daily with calcium lactate. Dosing requires individualized medical supervision.
Side Effects
Hypervitaminosis D may cause renal impairment, mental retardation, widespread soft tissue calcification, bone demineralization, and gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea and constipation.
Interactions
Mineral oil interferes with vitamin D absorption. Thiazide diuretics may cause hypercalcemia in hypoparathyroid patients.
Warnings
Hypersensitivity to vitamin D may be one etiologic factor in infants with idiopathic hypercalcemia. Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, malabsorption syndrome, and hypervitaminosis D.
Pregnancy
Vitamin D in excess of recommended dietary allowance during pregnancy should be avoided unless benefits outweigh hazards.
