Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) available as film-coated tablets containing escitalopram oxalate equivalent to 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg of escitalopram base.

Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) available as film-coated tablets containing escitalopram oxalate equivalent to 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg of escitalopram base.

Uses

Indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older, and treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.

Dosage

Initial dose 10 mg once daily for both MDD and GAD. Maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. For elderly patients and those with hepatic impairment, recommended dose is 10 mg daily. Administer orally once daily, morning or evening, with or without food.

Side Effects

Most common adverse reactions (5% or greater incidence, twice placebo rate) include: insomnia, ejaculation disorder, nausea, sweating increased, fatigue and somnolence, decreased libido, and anorgasmia.

Interactions

Avoid concomitant use with SSRIs, SNRIs, or tryptophan. Use caution with drugs affecting hemostasis (NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin). Contraindicated with MAOIs and pimozide. Monitor for serotonin syndrome with other serotonergic drugs.

Warnings

WARNING: SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS - Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric and young adult patients. Risk of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic agents. Discontinuation syndrome may occur. Contraindicated with MAOIs or within 14 days of MAOI use, and with pimozide.

Pregnancy

Exposure to SSRIs, particularly in the month before delivery, has been associated with risk of postpartum hemorrhage and persistent pulmonary hypertension and poor neonatal adaptation. Escitalopram is present in breast milk.
