Esterified estrogens and methyltestosterone tablets contain 1.25 mg esterified estrogens and 2.5 mg methyltestosterone (full strength), or 0.625 mg and 1.25 mg respectively (half strength).

Overview

Esterified estrogens and methyltestosterone tablets contain 1.25 mg esterified estrogens and 2.5 mg methyltestosterone (full strength), or 0.625 mg and 1.25 mg respectively (half strength).

Uses

Treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause in patients not improved by estrogens alone.

Dosage

One tablet of full-strength or one to two of half-strength daily, given cyclically (three weeks on, one week off). Use lowest effective dose for shortest duration.

Side Effects

Common: headache, breast pain, irregular vaginal bleeding, abdominal cramps, nausea. Serious: breast cancer, uterine cancer, stroke, heart attack, blood clots, dementia, gallbladder disease.

Interactions

Androgen interactions: anticoagulants require close monitoring; oxyphenbutazone may elevate; insulin requirements may decrease in diabetics.

Warnings

Estrogens increase the risk of endometrial cancer requiring clinical surveillance. Estrogens with or without progestins should not be used for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Contraindicated with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, breast cancer history, active blood clots, recent arterial disease, liver dysfunction.

Pregnancy

Should not be used during pregnancy as medication may cause severe fetal harm and virilization of female fetuses. Estrogens pass into breast milk and may decrease milk quality.

Storage

Store at 20-25C (68-77F); excursions allowed to 15-30C (59-86F). Keep out of children's reach.
