Uses
Treatment of insomnia; decreases sleep latency and improves sleep maintenance.
Dosage
Adults: start 1 mg, may increase to 2-3 mg. Elderly/debilitated: max 2 mg. Severe hepatic impairment or potent CYP3A4 inhibitors: max 2 mg. Use the lowest effective dose.
Side Effects
Common: headache, unpleasant taste, somnolence, dizziness, dry mouth. Less common: hallucinations, confusion, anxiety, rash.
Interactions
Additive CNS effects with ethanol, benzodiazepines, opioids. CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole) increase exposure 2.2-fold. Inducers decrease effectiveness.
Warnings
CNS depressant effects; next-day impairment at higher doses; abnormal thinking/behavior changes; sleep-driving risk; anaphylaxis possible; withdrawal effects; use caution with elderly patients. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to eszopiclone.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C. No adequate studies in pregnant women. Animal studies showed no teratogenicity at doses studied. Unknown if excreted in breast milk.
Storage
Store at room temperature 20C to 25C (68F to 77F); excursions permitted to 15C to 30C.
