Overview
Oral contraceptive tablets containing 1 mg ethynodiol diacetate and 50 mcg ethinyl estradiol as active ingredients in orange tablets, with green inert tablets.
Uses
Prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use oral contraceptives.
Dosage
Take one orange tablet daily for 21 days at the same time, then one green inert tablet daily for 7 days. May start on Day 1 of menstrual flow or on Sunday. Use backup contraception for first 7 days if Sunday start.
Side Effects
Common: nausea, vomiting, breakthrough bleeding, spotting, menstrual flow changes, amenorrhea, edema, chloasma, breast tenderness. Serious: thrombophlebitis, arterial thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, gallbladder disease, liver tumors.
Interactions
Reduced efficacy with rifampin, barbiturates, phenytoin, griseofulvin, ampicillin, tetracyclines. Troglitazone reduces hormone plasma concentrations by approximately 30%. Cannot co-administer with certain Hepatitis C therapies.
Warnings
Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels from oral contraceptive use. This risk increases with age and with heavy smoking and is quite marked in women over 35 years of age. Contraindicated with thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, cerebrovascular disease, myocardial infarction, breast cancer, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.

Category X - not for use during pregnancy. Small amounts of steroids enter breast milk; may interfere with lactation quality.
