Etomidate is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution containing 2 mg etomidate per mL with 35% propylene glycol for intravenous administration.

Uses

For intravenous induction of general anesthesia and supplementation of subpotent agents like nitrous oxide.

Dosage

Adults and pediatric patients over 10 years: 0.2-0.6 mg/kg IV, usual dose 0.3 mg/kg over 30-60 seconds. Geriatric patients may need reduced doses.

Side Effects

Transient venous pain (approximately 20%) and skeletal muscle movements including myoclonus (approximately 32%). Also respiratory changes, circulatory effects, and GI symptoms possible.

Warnings

Only trained personnel should administer. Not for prolonged infusion due to cortisol/aldosterone suppression risks. Pediatric neurotoxicity concerns with extended use. Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to etomidate.

Pregnancy

No adequate human studies. Animal data shows fetal concerns at certain doses. Use not recommended in obstetrics.
