Etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring is a non-biodegradable flexible vaginal ring containing etonogestrel (progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) for contraception.

Uses

Indicated for use by females of reproductive age to prevent pregnancy.

Dosage

Insert one ring vaginally; leave in place continuously for 3 weeks, then remove for 1-week break. Insert new ring after break on same day/time as previous cycle.

Side Effects

Common: vaginitis, headache/migraine, mood changes, device-related events, nausea/vomiting, vaginal discharge, weight gain, breast tenderness, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, acne, decreased libido.

Interactions

Enzyme inducers (phenytoin, barbiturates, carbamazepine, rifampicin, St. John's wort) may reduce effectiveness. Use backup contraception with enzyme inducers for 28 days after discontinuation.

Warnings

Cigarette smoking increases risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially in women over 35. Risk of blood clots highest when starting or restarting use. Stop use before major surgery (4 weeks prior through 2 weeks after). Contraindicated with smoking over age 35, history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, uncontrolled hypertension.

Pregnancy

Contraindicated during pregnancy. Not recommended while breastfeeding; may reduce milk production.

Storage

Store refrigerated 2-8C before dispensing. After dispensing, store up to 4 months at 25C. Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures above 30C.
