Fluticasone propionate and salmeterol DISKUS is a combination inhalation powder containing a corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist for oral inhalation in the treatment of asthma and COPD.

Fluticasone propionate and salmeterol DISKUS is a combination inhalation powder containing a corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist for oral inhalation in the treatment of asthma and COPD.

Uses

Indicated for twice-daily treatment of asthma in patients aged 4 years and older, and maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in COPD patients. Not indicated for relief of acute bronchospasm.

Dosage

1 inhalation twice daily by oral inhalation route only. For asthma ages 12+: 100/50, 250/50, or 500/50 mcg based on severity. Ages 4-11: 100/50 mcg. For COPD: 250/50 mcg. Patient should rinse mouth with water without swallowing after inhalation.

Side Effects

Most common include upper respiratory tract infection, pharyngitis, dysphonia, oral candidiasis, bronchitis, cough, headaches, nausea and vomiting in asthma patients. In COPD: pneumonia, oral candidiasis, throat irritation, dysphonia, viral respiratory infections.

Interactions

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors not recommended (ritonavir, ketoconazole). Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants: use with extreme caution. Beta-blockers may block bronchodilatory effects. Non-potassium-sparing diuretics may worsen hypokalemia.

Warnings

LABA monotherapy increases the risk of serious asthma-related events. Do not initiate in acutely deteriorating asthma or COPD. Potential for paradoxical bronchospasm, candida infection, pneumonia risk in COPD patients, immunosuppression concerns. Contraindicated for primary treatment of status asthmaticus. Severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins is a contraindication.

Pregnancy
