Furosemide is a potent diuretic and anthranilic acid derivative available in 20mg, 40mg, and 80mg tablets for the treatment of edema and hypertension.

Uses

Indicated for edema treatment in congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease. Also used for hypertension management in adults and pediatric patients.

Dosage

Adults: Initial dose 20-80mg as single dose; may increase by 20-40mg at 6-8 hour intervals. Maximum 600mg/day for severe cases. Pediatric: 2mg/kg initial dose, max 6mg/kg.

Side Effects

Includes hepatic encephalopathy, pancreatitis, anaphylaxis, tinnitus, hearing loss, aplastic anemia, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, orthostatic hypotension, hyperglycemia, and hyperuricemia.

Interactions

Avoid concomitant use with aminoglycoside antibiotics, ethacrynic acid, lithium, NSAIDs. May potentiate ACE inhibitors/ARBs effects. Separate from sucralfate by 2 hours minimum.

Warnings

Potent diuretic risks include profound diuresis, water and electrolyte depletion. Risk of ototoxicity, especially with rapid injection or high doses. Requires careful medical supervision. Contraindicated in patients with anuria and hypersensitivity to furosemide.

Pregnancy

Furosemide should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus. Animal studies showed maternal deaths and abortions at high doses. Caution with nursing mothers as furosemide appears in breast milk.

Storage

Store 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Keep in well-closed, light-resistant containers. Discolored tablets should not be dispensed.
