Loteprednol etabonate is a sterile topical anti-inflammatory corticosteroid for ophthalmic use containing 0.5% loteprednol etabonate, indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the eye.

Uses

Indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions including allergic conjunctivitis, acne rosacea, keratitis, iritis, and post-operative inflammation.

Dosage

Apply one to two drops into conjunctival sac four times daily. May increase to 1 drop hourly during first week if needed.

Side Effects

Common reactions (5-15%): blurring, burning, chemosis, discharge, dry eyes. Less common: elevated intraocular pressure, posterior subcapsular cataract, secondary infections.

Warnings

Prolonged use may result in glaucoma, visual defects, cataracts. Risk of secondary infections. May exacerbate viral infections including herpes simplex. Contraindicated in viral diseases (herpes simplex, vaccinia, varicella), mycobacterial and fungal infections, and hypersensitivity to ingredients.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy Category C: Animal studies showed embryotoxicity and teratogenicity at doses significantly higher than clinical doses. Unknown if systemic absorption occurs during nursing; caution advised.
