Neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate and dexamethasone is an ophthalmic suspension containing antibiotics and a corticosteroid for topical eye application, indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection risk exists.
Uses
For steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection risk exists. Active against common pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Haemophilus influenzae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Dosage
One to two drops in the conjunctival sac(s). In severe disease, drops may be used hourly. In mild disease, drops may be used up to four to six times daily.
Side Effects
Allergic sensitization, elevated intraocular pressure, glaucoma, optic nerve damage, posterior subcapsular cataract, delayed wound healing, corneal ulcers, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome reported.
Warnings
Not for injection. May prolong/worsen viral infections. Prolonged use risks glaucoma, vision defects, cataracts, and immune suppression. Monitor IOP if used 10+ days. Risk of corneal/scleral perforation. Contraindicated in viral corneal/conjunctival diseases, mycobacterial infections, fungal diseases, and known hypersensitivity.
Pregnancy
Dexamethasone has been shown to be teratogenic in mice and rabbits following topical ophthalmic application. Use only if benefit justifies fetal risk. Caution advised during nursing due to potential systemic corticosteroid absorption into human milk.
