Norepinephrine bitartrate is a catecholamine supplied as a sterile IV solution indicated to raise blood pressure in adult patients with severe, acute hypotension.

Uses

Indicated to raise blood pressure in adult patients with severe, acute hypotension. Used for restoration of blood pressure in acute hypotensive states.

Dosage

Initiate 8 to 12 mcg/min IV infusion, adjust rate to maintain vital organ perfusion. Average maintenance dose 2 to 4 mcg/min. Reduce infusion gradually upon discontinuation.

Side Effects

Most common: hypertension and bradycardia. Also: anxiety, headache, respiratory difficulty, pulmonary edema, ischemic injury, extravasation necrosis.

Interactions

MAOIs/tricyclic antidepressants may cause severe hypertension. Decreases insulin sensitivity. Halogenated anesthetics increase cardiac arrhythmia risk.

Warnings

Risk of tissue ischemia from extravasation. Hypotension after abrupt discontinuation. Cardiac arrhythmias. Avoid leg veins in elderly. Address hypovolemia before use.

Pregnancy

Limited human data shows no increased birth defect risk. Animal studies at high doses showed decreased placental blood flow and fetal abnormalities.

Storage

Store 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F) in original carton to protect from light. Use within 7 days of overwrap removal. Do not freeze.
