Norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol and ferrous fumarate is a combination oral contraceptive supplied as soft gelatin capsules with ferrous fumarate placebo capsules, indicated for pregnancy prevention.
Uses
Indicated for use by females of reproductive potential to prevent pregnancy.
Dosage
Take one capsule by mouth at the same time every day in the order directed on the blister pack. May be taken without regard to meals. 24 active capsules followed by 4 placebo capsules.
Side Effects
Most common include headache (6.3%), vaginal candidiasis (6.1%), nausea (4.6%), menstrual cramps (4.4%), and breast tenderness (3.4%).
Interactions
Enzyme inducers (phenytoin, rifampin, St. John's wort) may decrease effectiveness. Some antiretrovirals and other drugs may alter hormone concentrations.
Warnings
Cigarette smoking increases risk of serious cardiovascular events from oral contraceptive use, especially in women over 35. Risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Contraindicated in history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, uncontrolled hypertension, migraine with aura, breast cancer, liver disease.
Pregnancy
No use during pregnancy. Discontinue if pregnancy occurs. No increased risk of birth defects from prior use. Not recommended during breastfeeding as it can decrease milk production.
Storage
Store at 25 degrees C (77 degrees F); excursions permitted to 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F).
