Uses

Indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use oral contraceptives as a method of contraception.

Dosage

One tablet daily at same time. 21 active tablets followed by 7 ferrous fumarate tablets. Two regimens available: Day-1 Start or Sunday-Start.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, breakthrough bleeding, weight gain, and breast tenderness. Serious adverse reactions include thromboembolism, myocardial infarction, and stroke.

Interactions

Rifampin, anticonvulsants (phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine), and certain antibiotics may reduce contraceptive effectiveness.

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from combination oral contraceptive use. Risk increases with age, particularly in women over 35.
