Uses
Indicated for prevention of pregnancy in women who elect oral contraceptive use. When taken correctly without missing pills, effectiveness is approximately 1% failure rate per year.
Dosage
Take one pill daily at the same time. Available as triphasic (varying hormone doses across three weeks) or monophasic (consistent hormone levels) formulations. 21 active pills plus 7 reminder pills per cycle. Start on Sunday or Day 1 of menstrual cycle.
Side Effects
Common: nausea, vomiting, bleeding between periods, weight gain, breast tenderness, contact lens difficulty. Serious (rare): blood clots, stroke, heart attack, liver tumors, gallbladder disease, increased blood pressure.
Interactions
Reduced effectiveness with seizure medicines (carbamazepine, phenytoin), rifampin, St. John's wort, bosentan, and certain HIV medicines. Lamotrigine interaction may increase seizure risk. Thyroid hormone users may need dose adjustment.
