Norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol is a combination oral contraceptive indicated for pregnancy prevention and treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in females aged 15 and older who desire oral contraception.

Norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol is a combination oral contraceptive indicated for pregnancy prevention and treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in females aged 15 and older who desire oral contraception.
Uses
Indicated for pregnancy prevention in females of reproductive potential. Also approved for treating moderate acne vulgaris in females aged 15+ who desire oral contraception.
Dosage
Take one tablet daily at the same time each day. Follow blister pack order. Day 1 start: begin on first day of menses. Sunday start: begin first Sunday after menses onset. 21 active tablets and 7 inert tablets per cycle.
Side Effects
Most common: headache/migraine (32.9-33.6%), breast issues (6.3-8%), vaginal infection (7.1-8.4%), abdominal/GI pain (5.6-7.8%), mood disorders (3.8-5%), genital discharge (3.2-6.8%).
Interactions
Enzyme inducers (phenytoin, barbiturates, rifampicin, St. John's wort) may decrease COC effectiveness. CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase hormone concentrations. Colesevelam significantly decreases ethinyl estradiol exposure.
Warnings
Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from combination oral contraceptive use. Stop use if thrombotic event occurs. Stop at least 4 weeks before and through 2 weeks after major surgery. Contraindicated in women over 35 who smoke, with history of DVT/PE, arterial/venous thrombotic disease, uncontrolled hypertension, liver disease, breast cancer.
Pregnancy
No indication for use during pregnancy. Should be discontinued if pregnancy occurs. No increased risk of birth defects with prior COC exposure. Not recommended during lactation.
