Combination tablet containing olmesartan medoxomil (angiotensin II receptor antagonist) and hydrochlorothiazide (thiazide diuretic) for the treatment of hypertension.

Overview

Combination tablet containing olmesartan medoxomil (angiotensin II receptor antagonist) and hydrochlorothiazide (thiazide diuretic) for the treatment of hypertension.

Uses

Indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Not indicated for initial therapy of hypertension.

Dosage

Starting dose of 40/12.5 mg once daily for patients inadequately controlled on olmesartan alone, or 20/12.5 mg once daily for those on hydrochlorothiazide alone. Maximum dose is 40/25 mg.

Side Effects

Most common adverse reactions (incidence 2% or greater): nausea, hyperuricemia, dizziness, and upper respiratory infection. Serious reactions include sprue-like enteropathy with chronic diarrhea and angle-closure glaucoma.

Interactions

Dual blockade of the RAS with angiotensin receptor blockers, ACE inhibitors, or aliskiren is associated with increased risks of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and changes in renal function.

Warnings

Fetal toxicity: Drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and death to the developing fetus. When pregnancy is detected, discontinue as soon as possible. Additional concerns include hypotension, renal impairment, electrolyte imbalances, and acute myopia.

Pregnancy

Significant fetal risks exist, particularly during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Discontinuation is mandatory upon pregnancy detection.
