Microencapsulated potassium chloride oral capsules with controlled release over 8-10 hours for the treatment and prevention of hypokalemia.
Uses
Indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of hypokalemia in adults and children when dietary management or diuretic adjustment proves insufficient.
Dosage
Adults typically receive 40-100 mEq daily for treatment with a maximum of 40 mEq per dose. Pediatric patients receive 2-4 mEq/kg/day. Take with meals and with a full glass of water or other liquid.
Side Effects
Most common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain or discomfort, and diarrhea. Rare reports of hyperkalemia and GI complications.
Interactions
Monitor for hyperkalemia with RAAS inhibitors and NSAIDs. Avoid concurrent use with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Warnings
Solid oral dosage forms of potassium chloride can produce ulcerative and stenotic lesions if prolonged GI contact occurs. Do not take on empty stomach. Contraindicated with concomitant use of amiloride or triamterene.
