Potassium citrate is an oral wax-matrix tablet used for the management of kidney stones. Available in 5 mEq and 10 mEq strengths.

Uses

Treatment of renal tubular acidosis with calcium stones, hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis of any origin, and uric acid lithiasis with or without calcium stones.

Dosage

Severe cases require 60 mEq daily. Mild-to-moderate cases need 30 mEq daily, divided into 2-3 doses with meals. Doses greater than 100 mEq/day have not been studied.

Side Effects

Minor gastrointestinal complaints such as abdominal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea, loose bowel movements, or nausea.

Interactions

Avoid potassium-sparing diuretics. Monitor potassium levels with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and NSAIDs.

Warnings

Risk of hyperkalemia in patients with impaired potassium excretion. Potential gastrointestinal lesions with severe symptoms. Contraindicated in hyperkalemia, GI obstruction, peptic ulcer disease, active urinary tract infection, and renal insufficiency.

Pregnancy
