Pyridostigmine bromide is an oral cholinesterase inhibitor available as white tablets containing 60 mg pyridostigmine bromide for the treatment of myasthenia gravis.
Uses
Useful in the treatment of myasthenia gravis.
Dosage
Individualized dosing required. Average dose is ten 60 mg tablets spaced throughout the day. Severe cases may require up to 25 tablets daily, while mild cases may need 2-12 tablets.
Side Effects
Muscarinic effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased salivation. Nicotinic effects: muscle cramps, weakness. Skin rash may occasionally occur and usually subsides upon discontinuation.
Warnings
Overdosage may cause cholinergic crisis with severe muscle weakness. Differentiation from myasthenic crisis is critical since treatment approaches differ radically. Contraindicated in mechanical intestinal or urinary obstruction. Caution needed with bronchial asthma.
Storage
Store at 25 degrees C. Excursions permitted 15-30 degrees C in tight, light-resistant containers.
