Uses

Indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults and in pediatric patients 6 to 17 years old. Not intended for prevention or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine types.

Dosage

Adults: 5-10 mg single dose with minimum 2-hour intervals between doses, maximum 30 mg per 24 hours. Pediatric (6-17 years): weight-based dosing of 5 mg (under 40 kg) or 10 mg (40 kg and above). Dosage reduction required with propranolol co-administration.

Side Effects

Most common in adults: asthenia/fatigue, somnolence, pain/pressure sensations, and dizziness. Serious reactions include myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and cerebrovascular events.

Interactions

Propranolol increases rizatriptan plasma levels by 70%. Ergot-containing drugs and other triptans contraindicated within 24 hours. SSRIs/SNRIs carry serotonin syndrome risk.
