Sodium phenylacetate and sodium benzoate injection is a sterile concentrated solution for intravenous use in the treatment of acute hyperammonemia in patients with urea cycle enzyme deficiencies.

Uses

Treatment of acute hyperammonemia and associated encephalopathy in pediatric and adult patients with urea cycle enzyme deficiencies, used as adjunctive therapy alongside other interventions.

Dosage

Must be diluted with 10% dextrose before IV administration via central venous catheter only. Loading dose given over 90-120 minutes, followed by equivalent maintenance dose over 24 hours. Dosing based on weight for younger patients and body surface area for larger patients.

Side Effects

Most frequent reactions (6% or greater) include vomiting, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, convulsions, and mental impairment. Severe reactions range from coagulopathy to respiratory failure.

Interactions
