Treatment of urinary tract infections, acute otitis media in pediatric patients, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, shigellosis, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, and traveler's diarrhea caused by susceptible bacteria.

Dosage

Adults typically receive one DS tablet (800/160 mg) or two regular tablets (400/80 mg) every 12 hours. Children receive 40 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole and 8 mg/kg trimethoprim daily in divided doses. Dosage adjustments required for impaired renal function.

Side Effects

Most common are gastrointestinal disturbances and allergic skin reactions. Serious reactions include Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, and hepatic necrosis.

Interactions

Avoid concurrent use with dofetilide, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and certain diuretics. Monitor when using with warfarin, phenytoin, digoxin, and oral hypoglycemics.
