Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide is a combination tablet containing an angiotensin II receptor blocker and a thiazide diuretic for the treatment of hypertension.

Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide is a combination tablet containing an angiotensin II receptor blocker and a thiazide diuretic for the treatment of hypertension.

Uses

Treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure in patients not adequately controlled on monotherapy or as initial therapy in those likely needing multiple drugs.

Dosage

Usual starting dose is 160/12.5 mg once daily. Can be increased after 1-2 weeks to maximum of 320/25 mg as needed. Available in five strengths: 80/12.5, 160/12.5, 160/25, 320/12.5, and 320/25 mg.

Side Effects

Most common discontinuation reasons were headache and dizziness. Nasopharyngitis occurred in 2% or greater at higher rates than placebo.

Interactions

Significant interactions with lithium, potassium-elevating agents, NSAIDs, and dual RAS blockade agents.

Warnings

Fetal toxicity: discontinue upon pregnancy detection. Drugs affecting the renin-angiotensin system cause injury and death to the developing fetus. Risk of hypotension in volume-depleted patients, impaired renal function, potassium abnormalities, and acute angle-closure glaucoma. Contraindicated with aliskiren in diabetic patients.
